The legalization of cannabis cultivation in the Netherlands under strict government control presents unique challenges, particularly in managing odor emissions and air quality. CanAdelaar, operating from a converted tomato greenhouse in Hellevoetsluis, rapidly scaled up its production but soon encountered complaints about odor pollution from local residents.
To proactively address these concerns, CanAdelaar invested in state-of-the-art air purification systems from VFA Solutions. The ASPRA MT25 units were strategically installed throughout the facility, ensuring efficient odor control, pathogen removal, and compliance with environmental standards. Problem Description
The legalization of cannabis cultivation in the Netherlands, under government supervision, requires strict compliance with air quality and odor control regulations. As one of the licensed cannabis growers, CanAdelaar converted an existing tomato greenhouse into a high-tech cannabis production facility. However, shortly after launching operations, odor complaints from the local community raised concerns about the environmental impact.
Cannabis cultivation produces strong-smelling terpenes, which can be disruptive to nearby residents. Additionally, ultra-fine dust, fungi, and airborne pathogens pose risks to plant health, worker safety, and compliance with environmental standards. CanAdelaar needed a proven and scalable solution to tackle these challenges without compromising operational efficiency.
The Solution
To address odor and air quality challenges, VFA Solutions implemented the ASPRA MT25 air purification system, specially designed for horticulture and cannabis cultivation. 72 units were installed throughout CanAdelaar’s facility, each featuring electrostatic filtration and activated carbon technology to efficiently capture and neutralize odor molecules, ultra-fine particles, and harmful airborne contaminants.
The ASPRA MT25 integrates with centralized controls and customized adsorbent materials, tailored specifically for cannabis environments. This energy-efficient technology reduces the ventilation energy costs by up to 80% while ensuring a cleaner and healthier atmosphere for workers and surrounding communities. The solution also prevents contaminants such as Botrytis and powdery mildew, safeguarding plant health and product quality.
