Energy-Efficient Ventilation for Schools and Day Care Centers
Revolutionizing School Ventilation with ASPRA Technology
VFA Solutions, in collaboration with TNO Science & Industry and Lucam B.V., successfully completed the SchoolVent project as part of the Top Consortium Knowledge and Innovation (TKI) Urban Energy initiative. This groundbreaking project focused on creating a cost-efficient ventilation system tailored for renovating schools and day care centers. The system achieves an 80% reduction in energy consumption for cooling and filtering while maintaining a Class A indoor environment. Equipped with Smart Sensoring technology, it automatically monitors and reports air quality anomalies. The solution also supports the transition to energy-neutral or energy-supplying buildings, making it a scalable option for schools, offices, and other spaces.

Detailed Process
1. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION —Schools and day care centers often face high energy costs for cooling and filtering air while struggling to maintain a healthy indoor environment. Renovating these facilities with traditional systems is energy-intensive and costly.
Additionally, ensuring Class A air quality in these environments is critical to support the well-being and productivity of children and staff. The challenge was to develop an innovative ventilation system that could dramatically reduce energy consumption while providing effective air purification.
The Solution
2. THE SOLUTION —VFA Solutions implemented a ventilation system equipped with advanced cooling and filtering technologies, including the VFA ASPRA electrostatic filter module. This system, capable of processing 10,000 m³/h, achieves an 80% reduction in pressure drop while removing 90–95% of fine dust (PM2.5).Smart sensors were integrated to continuously monitor and report on CO2, temperature, humidity, and particulate concentrations, ensuring real-time air quality management. The system also incorporates dew point cooling and heat recovery for maximum energy efficiency. A single air handling unit can supply air to 4–5 classrooms, making it scalable and cost-effective.
The Result
3. THE RESULT —The SchoolVent project achieved outstanding results, including a 40–80% reduction in energy consumption in an existing school. Air-conditioned rooms equipped with the ASPRA system saw a 70–96% decrease in PM2.5 concentrations compared to reference rooms. The VFA ASPRA filter module exceeded E10 filter specifications at standard flow rates and approached E11 standards at lower rates, ensuring exceptional air quality with minimal energy use. These advancements demonstrate a sustainable solution for energy-efficient and healthy indoor environments, ready for application in schools, offices, and beyond.
