Mitsubishi Elevators: Clean Air Solutions with ASPRA Technology

Ensuring Safe Elevator Rides with M-Care ASPRA

Reducing Airborne Contamination in High-Traffic Elevators

Elevators are high-traffic spaces where airborne aerosols, including virus particles, can linger for 20–30 minutes, posing a significant contamination risk. Traditional ventilation methods, such as opening doors between rides, are insufficient to remove these contaminants effectively.

To tackle this issue, Mitsubishi Elevators partnered with VFA Solutions (developer of ASPRA) to introduce the M-Care ASPRA air purification system. This innovative solution provides continuous air cleaning in both new and existing elevators, ensuring a safer environment for passengers by actively reducing aerosol concentrations and airborne contaminants.

About the Project

Elevators serve as essential transport hubs in buildings, but their confined spaces create an elevated risk of airborne contamination. Studies show that aerosols, including virus particles (such as COVID-19), can remain airborne for 20–30 minutes, increasing the potential for transmission.

Recognizing this challenge, Mitsubishi Elevators partnered with VFA Solutions to develop and implement the M-Care ASPRA system—a specialized air purifier designed to ensure continuous ventilation, filtration, and purification in elevators. By actively removing airborne pathogens, dust, and pollutants, this solution enhances safety and improves air quality for elevator passengers.

Detailed Approach

Problem Description

Elevators are critical for daily transport in office buildings, hospitals, and high-rise residences, but their enclosed space increases the risk of airborne contamination. Studies indicate that aerosols, including virus particles, can remain airborne for up to 30 minutes, raising safety concerns for passengers.

Traditional ventilation methods, such as opening doors between rides, have proven insufficient in reducing airborne particle concentrations. Mitsubishi Elevators sought an effective air purification solution to enhance passenger safety and air quality while maintaining efficient elevator operations.

The Solution

To combat airborne contamination, VFA Solutions developed the M-Care ASPRA, an advanced air purification system specifically designed for elevator cabins. The solution provides two key functionalities:

1. ASPRA M-Care: A mechanical ventilation and filtration system that introduces overpressure inside the cabin, ensuring continuous airflow and high ventilation rates.

2. ASPRA M-Care Ceiling: A localized air purification system that safely recirculates and filters cabin air to eliminate aerosols, pathogens, and dust.

By integrating high-efficiency filtration and continuous air renewal, the ASPRA M-Care system actively minimizes airborne risks while maintaining comfortable, clean, and safe elevator rides.

The Result

The ASPRA M-Care system provided a measurable improvement in elevator air quality at World Trade Center Amsterdam, where tests demonstrated that the system significantly lowered airborne particle concentrations.

Key findings included:

✔ Aerosol concentrations inside the elevator were significantly lower compared to both the building's air shaft and pre-installation baseline measurements.

✔ The ASPRA M-Care system rapidly decreased aerosol levels, even outperforming conventional ventilation through open doors.

✔ Prevented PM10 particle infiltration from hallways when elevator doors were opened.

With these results, Mitsubishi Elevators successfully implemented a safer, more efficient air purification strategy, allowing faster elevator operations without restricting capacity to one or two passengers per ride.
