BMC Moerdijk: Advanced Air Purification for Power Plant Emissions
Eliminating Dust, Odors, and Ammonia Emissions at BMC Moerdijk
The BMC Moerdijk power plant processes one-third of the Netherlands’ poultry manure, generating 285,000 MWh of electricity annually. However, this process releases dust, odors, and ammonia, impacting both indoor air quality and environmental emissions.
To address this challenge, BMC Moerdijk partnered with VFA Solutions to implement ASPRA EcoVent ventilation systems with an integrated gas scrubber and local VFA air extraction. These state-of-the-art air purification solutions ensure optimal indoor air quality while preventing harmful emissions from spreading into the outdoor environment.

About the Project
The BMC Moerdijk power plant plays a crucial role in sustainable energy production, processing poultry manure to generate clean electricity equivalent to the power consumption of a city like Den Bosch. However, manure processing can release high levels of dust, ammonia, and odors, creating challenges for both worker safety and environmental compliance.
To ensure optimal indoor air quality and prevent emissions, BMC Moerdijk commissioned VFA Solutions for its new construction project, which includes a discharge hall, manure storage hall, and ash storage hall. By implementing the ASPRA EcoVent ventilation system, combined with local VFA air extraction, the facility now operates with enhanced air quality, reduced emissions, and a sustainable ventilation setup.

Detailed Approach

Problem Description
The BMC Moerdijk power plant processes large amounts of poultry manure, which releases harmful emissions such as dust, odors, and ammonia. These airborne pollutants can affect indoor working conditions and pose environmental concerns if not managed properly.
To ensure air quality and regulatory compliance, BMC Moerdijk required an effective air purification system that could filter harmful gases and particles while maintaining negative pressure in storage areas to prevent emissions from spreading throughout the facility.
The Solution
VFA Solutions installed the ASPRA EcoVent ventilation system, a cutting-edge air purification technology based on the ASPRA PMC air purifier. This system efficiently removes emissions at the source, ensuring that manure storage halls remain under negative pressure to prevent the spread of airborne contaminants.
The ventilation setup was divided into two systems, each capable of handling 40,000 m³/h, allowing for continuous operation during maintenance. The air purification process consists of three filtration stages: electrostatic filtration (removing coarse dust and germs), collector filters (capturing fine dust), and gas filtration (neutralizing ammonia and odors).

The Result
The installation of ASPRA EcoVent systems at BMC Moerdijk successfully eliminated dust, ammonia, and odors, creating a safe and clean working environment while ensuring compliance with emission regulations.
With continuous air purification, optimized ventilation, and negative pressure control, the power plant now operates with high efficiency and minimal environmental impact. This project stands as a benchmark for sustainable emission control in the energy sector.
