Validating ASPRA Technology for COVID-19 Hospital Departments
Ensuring Clean and Safe Air in COVID Wards with ASPRA Validation
To enhance air quality in a Dutch hospital's COVID-19 department, ASPRA air purification units were installed to reduce high particle concentrations in patient rooms. An ASPRA Ceiling unit was placed above the suspended ceiling to remove airborne contaminants, while an ASPRA INduct unit was added to filter extracted air before recirculation.
The performance of these ASPRA units was rigorously validated by Modderkolk Projects & Maintenance, which conducted flow rate measurements, pressure assessments, and particle analyses. The results confirmed significant particle reduction, demonstrating the effectiveness of ASPRA technology in creating cleaner and safer air environments for patients and healthcare staff.

About the Project
Maintaining high air quality in COVID-19 hospital departments is critical to ensuring the safety of both patients and healthcare professionals. In response to increased airborne particle concentrations in patient rooms, a Dutch hospital sought an advanced air purification solution to minimize contamination risks.
To address this challenge, ASPRA Ceiling and INduct units were installed in hospital bed boxes, targeting particle removal at multiple levels. The ASPRA Ceiling unit was placed above the suspended ceiling to continuously purify indoor air, while the INduct ASPRA unit filtered the extracted air before it was recirculated into the HVAC system. The effectiveness of these installations was rigorously tested and validated by Modderkolk Projects & Maintenance, ensuring that the hospital achieved optimal air quality in critical areas.

Detailed Approach

Problem Description
Hospitals treating COVID-19 patients face heightened air quality challenges, as airborne particles and pathogens pose infection risks to both patients and medical staff. The existing ventilation systems were not sufficiently reducing particulate matter, necessitating an advanced air purification solution.
To maintain safe and clean air in patient rooms, the hospital required a validated purification system capable of removing ultrafine and hazardous particles while seamlessly integrating into the hospital’s existing infrastructure.
The Solution
To combat high particle concentrations, ASPRA Ceiling and ASPRA INduct units were installed in hospital bed boxes. The ASPRA Ceiling unit was positioned above the suspended ceiling, ensuring continuous air purification within patient rooms, while the ASPRA INduct unit was integrated into the air extraction system to remove particles from recirculated air.
These installations provided effective particle capture and airborne contaminant removal, ensuring cleaner air circulation. The validation process, carried out by Modderkolk Projects & Maintenance, included airflow measurements, pressure assessments, and particle testing to confirm the system’s effectiveness.

The Result
The ASPRA technology validation confirmed a significant reduction in airborne particle concentrations, particularly in the 0.3 μm to 10.0 μm range, which includes ultrafine contaminants. Measurements showed that particle counts under the ASPRA units were markedly lower than those in reference rooms.
This outcome highlights ASPRA’s role in enhancing air quality in high-risk hospital environments, ensuring cleaner air for patients and medical personnel. The validated ASPRA solution provides hospitals with a proven method for maintaining safe, controlled, and purified air in critical care departments.
