In a home located near busy highways, high concentrations of particulate matter from traffic emissions worsened the asthma symptoms of a young girl, causing discomfort indoors as well as outdoors. 1. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION — A family living near highways in the conurbation faced high particulate matter concentrations caused by traffic emissions. These pollutants worsened the asthma symptoms of their daughter, affecting her comfort both indoors and outdoors.
The family attempted to mitigate the problem by installing an F5 filter in their HVAC system, but this did not achieve the necessary reduction in particulate matter to improve her health.
